WAHM Wednesday: My Favorite Charity

This post is a little bit off-topic, but what good is a blog if you can’t use it to make a difference? After all, it’s WAHM Wednesday and Christmas is right around the corner.

A WritingThoughts reader, Kate of BabyLune, asked me to blog about my favorite charity. It’s part of her new group writing project. This particular group writing project is different because Kate is going to donate a certain amount to charity based on the number of people who participate in it. If a lot of people participate, Kate donates a larger amount to charity. If a few people participate, Kate donates less.

Truthfully, I had trouble picking just one favorite charity for this project. There are several small local charities that I would like to name, but they don’t have web sites for me to link to. Finally, I decided to name a charity that has been close to my heart since I was a little girl: Compassion International.

One of my favorite things about Compassion International is how they take care of the whole child over a long period of time. You get to help an impoverished child and their family with basic things like food, medicine, and clothing. You also get to help with that child’s education since the program also provides schooling for each child. Finally, the program is also concerned with child’s spiritual development. As I said, the program develops the whole child.

As soon as I could, I sponsored a child through Compassion International. Our family has been involved with the program ever since. I love the way that we get periodic updates on the child that we sponsor. I also love how we can communicate with the child and their family. (Sponsors who can afford it can even visit their child.)

What’s your favorite charity? Blog about it and you just might win an extra donation from BabyLune for it.

  1. Sounds like a great charity. May I ask where the child you sponsor is from?

  2. I agree. My favorite charity is Compassion.

You may be interested in watching this YouTube video about a former sponsored child and LDP graduate. It’s 7:38 minutes long, but it talks about the value of what Compassion and its sponsors are doing.

  3. Hi Debra and Chris!

The child that I sponsor is from South America.

  4. Chris,

That’s a wonderful video! Thanks for sharing it. I almost cried while I was watching it.

  5. I’m doing Feed the Children because I can feed more kids for my dollar, but I do have found memories of my experiences with Compassion Internation too. I do miss having a photo of an individual child to watch grow.

For me it came down to what I could afford and with Feed the Children I can feed two kids a month for only $16.

  6. Hi Wendy!

I’m not as familiar with the Feed the Children program, but I know that it’s been around a long time.

They don’t send you the child’s picture? I didn’t know that.
